Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback is a learning process whereby an individual learns to improve their own performance and health by observing signals that are generated by their own bodies. In this practice, neurofeedback focuses on brainwaves.

It measures the amplitude and frequency of different brainwaves. They are recorded by small sensors (electrodes) placed on various specific positions on the surface of the scalp. These electrodes record the underlying electrical activity produced by nerve cells in the brain. This recording is known as an electroencephalogram (EEG). These brainwaves are displayed on a computer screen.

Usually brainwaves with different frequencies occur together, with the faster waves riding above the slower waves. Different mental states will correspond to different EEG patterns. There will be different EEG patterns between an awake state and a sleeping state or between focused concentration/problem solving and drifting off/daydreaming or hyperactive and calm etc.

Neurofeedback is validated by scientific research studies as well as through clinical practice. The program is non-invasive and drug free. The patient uses self-regulation training to positively change their performance to reach their personal goals.
